Walter Sopicki began playing the guitar at the age of nine. He has studied privately with jazz guitarist Frank Gerard in the Buffalo, New York area. In 1999, Walter had the opportunity to study with famous Jazz guitarist, Pat Martino, in Philadadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1990, Walter received an Associates Degree in music performance at Villa Maria College in Buffalo, New York. In 1994, Walter received a Bachelor's degree in music at the State University of New York at Buffalo studying classical guitar with Joanne Castellani. Walter began playing professionally at the age of 19 in various rock bands in the Buffalo area. Soon after, Walter switched exclusively to Jazz after listening to Pat Martino's recording of Coltrane's Impressions. Walter Sopicki now performs regularly with his trio in the Buffalo/Niagara area, with performances in Rochester and Cleveland as well. Since 1998, Walter has been performing with David Kane's themjazzbeards and The David Kane Quartet (DKQ). In the fall of 2000, themjazzbeards performed in Dallas, Texas as part of the Buffalo-Niagara Partnership Event. In the summer of 2000, Walter released his first CD, Montgomery Square, which chronicles the music of some of Walter's favorite jazz guitarist. The single, Montgomery Square, written and composed by Walter himself, blends contemporary and new age jazz with Walter's own jazz style. In addition to recording a new album with the David Kane Quartet, Walter is currently teaching music at Twin Village Music in Lancaster, NY.
